Gyms on Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance
Four gyms sit on the same stretch of Hawthorne Blvd, between 19800 and 22715, and a fifth sits a few minutes away on 190th St. If you live or work in Torrance, these are the ones you are choosing between.
We run one of them. Athlos Iron Lair is the gym at 22715. Every address and every set of hours below is taken from that operator’s own published information on the date given. Where we give an opinion about another gym, we say in the sentence that it is an opinion and that it is ours, so you can discount it accordingly. Published hours change — check the club before you drive over.
The four gyms on Hawthorne Blvd
UFC Gym Torrance
19800 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503
Published hours: Mon 5:00 AM to midnight · Tue to Thu 24 hours · Fri midnight to 10:00 PM · Sat & Sun 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM
A national chain built around mixed-martial-arts-style training alongside general fitness. Its programming leads with classes and coached sessions, which is a different proposition from an open floor.
Planet Fitness Torrance
20040 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503
Published hours: Open and staffed 24/7
A national chain that markets itself on price and on its “Judgement Free Zone” approach. The floor is built around machines and cardio for general fitness.
24 Hour Fitness — Torrance Del Amo Ultra-Sport
21501 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503
Published hours: Open 24/7
Ultra-Sport is 24 Hour Fitness’s larger club format, and this is the biggest of the four buildings. Worth knowing: the company runs a second Torrance club, the Super-Sport on Pacific Coast Highway, and it keeps different hours. Check the club, not the brand.
Athlos Iron Lair
22715 Hawthorne Blvd, Unit B, Torrance, CA 90505
Published hours: 24-hour member access Mon to Fri · Sat & Sun 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM
A strength and bodybuilding gym: 17,500 square feet, a deep machine floor that runs about half plate-loaded and about half selectorised, racks, platforms and an outdoor strength zone. This is our gym, and the rest of this page says what it is for.
Addresses and hours as published by each operator on 5 September 2026.
The one that is not on Hawthorne: Dave Fisher’s Powerhouse Gym
5130 W 190th St, Torrance
Published hours: Mon to Fri 5:00 AM to midnight · Sat 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM · Sun 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Hours as published by Dave Fisher’s Powerhouse Gym on 9 September 2026. The gym publishes no address on its own website; the street address above is taken from its directory listings.
Powerhouse is not on Hawthorne Blvd, and it belongs on this page anyway. It is the other gym in Torrance built for the lifter we are built for, and a comparison page that quietly left out the one real competitor would tell you more about us than about the gyms. Dave Fisher earned his pro card in 1993 and has run a bodybuilding institution in this city for decades. If you are choosing between serious barbell floors in Torrance, you are choosing between his and ours.
Two of the differences are matters of published record. Powerhouse opens at 5:00 AM and closes at midnight Monday through Friday; members here have the room for all twenty-four of those hours. Powerhouse closes at 6:00 PM on Sunday; we close at 9:00 PM. And it costs less than we do — we are not going to pretend otherwise, and for a good number of lifters that is the end of the argument and a perfectly rational place to end it.
What follows is our opinion rather than anyone’s published information, and we are the competing gym, so weigh it accordingly. We think our floor is cleaner. We think our equipment is in better condition. And we think ours is markedly less crowded at the hours most people actually train, which is not luck: we cap the number of memberships we sell, and Powerhouse advertises no such limit. One thing that is not an opinion — Powerhouse has no showers, and if you train before work that is the detail that decides it.
Their website says you will find “NO WAIT for machines.” We think that is fair at eleven in the morning and at three in the afternoon, and we do not think it survives six o’clock on a Tuesday. Parking is the same story. Ours is close to 200 free surface spaces in the Southwood Riviera center, about 200 feet from the door, with no structure and no validation stamp; go and look at theirs at the hour you would actually train. All of that is our opinion set against their marketing copy, and it costs you nothing to settle for yourself.
You should not take our word for any of that, and you do not have to. Both gyms will show you the floor before you pay anyone a dollar. Stand in each of them at six o’clock on a Tuesday, which is the hour that settles every gym argument, and then decide whether the difference in price is worth the difference in the room.
Which one fits how you train
These are five different products, not five versions of the same one, and the honest answer to “which is best” depends entirely on what you walk in to do.
- You are here to lift, and you want the room to yourself. That is what Athlos Iron Lair is built for: barbells, competition bars, dedicated racks and platforms you do not queue for, a deep machine floor, an outdoor strength zone, and a membership roster capped on purpose so that six in the evening is a workable hour rather than a scrum.
- You want a long-established bodybuilding floor at a lower price. That is Dave Fisher’s Powerhouse on 190th St, and it has been that for forty years.
- You want classes, coaching and martial-arts-style work. That is what UFC Gym is built around.
- Price is the deciding factor. Planet Fitness competes on price and says so. If monthly cost governs the decision, start there.
- You want a large full-service club from a national operator, with the widest range of facilities under one roof. That is the Ultra-Sport format at 21501.
What Athlos Iron Lair is set up for
17,500 square feet on a single storey at 22715 Hawthorne Blvd, Unit B. The machine lines are Arsenal Strength, Hammer Strength and Gym 80, with Precor, Hansu and Rodgers frames alongside them. Roughly half the machine floor is plate-loaded, where you load barbell plates onto the uprights and each side moves independently of the other, and roughly half is selectorised, for the work where a pin is the right tool and the faster one. Squat racks and benches down one side, dumbbells, and a dedicated deadlift platform with bumper plates.
Outside there is a turf strength zone under shade sails, with plate-loaded machines, a sled track and tyres, lit for training after dark. Inside there is a private posing room, full showers and proper changing facilities. The room is well lit and cleaned through the day rather than after closing.
Members have 24-hour access Monday through Friday, and the doors are open 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. You can see the floor on thephoto gallery, the machines with demo clips onthe equipment page, and the whole room in one pass on the video tour.
Check it for yourself
Every gym on this page publishes its own hours, and they move. Before you commit to any of the five, look up the specific club rather than the brand, and then go and stand in it at the hour you would actually train. That last part is the one that settles it, and it is why we hand visitors a training pass rather than a brochure.
